Hunger in East Africa: Personnel Deployment for an On-Site Inspection


Due to a severe drought not seen in 60 years in east Africa, the flow of refugees from Somalia to refugee camps in Dadaab, Kenya is not stopping.
Many parents are forced to abandon their children. Others make it to camps only to be turned away. Graves of children keep on increasing.

Given this crisis in east Africa, from June 12-22,our managing director Hirohisa Seike and Hunger Zero special envoy Yoshihiko Akimoto (president of Pan Akimoto) will be visiting Kenya to assess the situation. A report of their assessment will be made on this year's World Food Day.

March 23 Evacuees encouraged with oven-fresh bread and canned soft bread

In the afternoon of March 22, Mr. Yoshihiko Akimoto, the president of Pan Akimoto Co., Ltd, arrived at JIFH base-camp in Sendai City in his van, filled with oven-fresh bread for 2000 people and several hundred portions of their Kyu-Can-Cho brand canned soft bread.

Planning to conduct soup-run service in Sendai City, Japan International Food for the Hungry has decided to procure ingredients,such as vegetables, rice and miso (fermented soybean) paste, from eruption-stricken farmers in Miyazaki prefecture. A Kobe-based non-profit organization will coordinate the procurement.

Samaritan's Purse, a large-scale relief international relief organization from USA has arrived in the base in Sendai and we brought cup noodles, water, tea, toilet paper, and sanitary products as the first critical material to a junior-high school which is one of the safe shelters in Tagajo-city.

Afternoon in March 15, 2011, Mr. Seike, Managing Director and Sin Okchul a staff of JIFH visited the port of Miyagino-ward, Sendai-city and saied, "I was so astonished to face this total defeated situation by Tsunami, this was much worse than the scenes I knew through TV. How powerful and awful the Tsunami was!"

Current Hunger Zero Africa Projects


Niger:
In cooperation with BarnabasFund, food distributions are carried out in semi-desert and desert area in the central part of the country. More than 1,400 families will receive 50kg sack of rice, and 100kg sack of millet or sorghum(approximately 2-3 months worth of food for a family of 6) each in the most affected communities.

Sudan:
Meal programs for 110 school children in Rumbek region of South Sudan is carried out. Parents of these children receive instruction on how to prepare nutritious meals for their children. Agricultural programs that allows for the villagers to provide sufficient meals for their family is to be provided.

Zimbabwe:
In Seke region, located 25 km away from the capital, Harare, one pack of eggs is provided to each of 100 AIDS orphans to supplement nutrition.

Zambia:
This project provides support (financial and know-how) for poor women in the community of Chipulusuku to start a small scale business in order to increase their income. The goal is for them to be able to earn enough to send their children to school and eat at least twice a day.  Carried out concurrently with this project is the support for the education of children in Chipulusuku community.

This project provide stationery, uniform, books, and tuition for their schooling.
